Joe’s learning portfolio was created in order to compensate for deficits that are associated with being on the autistic spectrum.

A learning portfolio is created based on three tiers. First the cognition tier which is based on the educator learning about the individual through what the excels in or finding what Joe needs help with. The second tier is Strategic portion. This is done through creating specific techniques to use with helping Joe.  The last section is effective approach, here we will  use Joe’s preferred likes to incorporate into his learning experience (Post University,N.D.).

When it comes to teaching there are two forms of learning plans you can follow, the Universal Design Learning,UDL, or  the UBD, the Universal Backward Design. While both forms of plans may be  different, they share one thing in common, they both are used to make a student like Joe successful.

The Universal Design Learning plans are made up of three instructional goals, first being Academic goals, this is where an individual has set goals in the classroom academically such as a goal on a math subject such as addition and how the student will accomplish it. Second is the e-behavioral goal, here a goal is set to help a student develop, behavior wise in a specific setting like a classroom e-behavioral goal maybe hitting another student due to a direction not in their liking , such as sharing. Last is the social-emotional goal, a student has goals set in place to help balance their emotions in group settings, a goal may be having a child clean up in a small group after they are done using manipulatives( Post University, N.D.).

The second learning design, the Universal Backward Design, is where a teacher takes an ending goal and works backward to achieve the goal. This design is a three-step process. First the instructor will go over the intended results of a lesson. Next is coming up with facts that can help produce the result. Finally, the teacher will provide the lesson( Learning Theories,2020). For example, if we took Joe’s goal on walking, we would note the ending result is Joe walking and running, Next, we will go over what we saw when he attempted to walk. Finally, we would go over the instruction on how we will obtain how we can get him to walk.

Joe’s Learning portfolio will be based off a Universal Design Learning for a classroom(UDL). A UDL is a form of curriculum to help a teacher incorporate every child’s individual needs in their teaching methods. There will be goals for each child in the classroom and ways of completing them( Cast,2020). When preparing a child’s UDL, we need to be able to adjust the plan to fit each child’s needs, not all students with autism will have the same deficits as Joe  so we cannot have a set plan in which well use for everyone. Joe’s strengths may actually be another’s weakness. I find this process a better learning plan as each steps seems to be in order as , we start with a lesson in the unit, go through each goal as we instruct the child on the topic in a way they can become the most successful.  There is also a downfall to this form of learning profile,

What aspects can the educator  do to improve on to help Joe with his tiers of his learning portfolio? How can the use of therapies encourage Joe to excel in all other aspects of his academic learning?

Part One:

Planning Pyramids are created by teachers once all learning profiles are completed. Once you start making your planning pyramid, there are 3 categories you need to master, the UbD model on what you would like the students to get out of the lesson, what skills it will take for them to achieve the knowledge and finally how much of the lesson the student understands(Post University, N.D.).

The Unit at hand is finding text evidence and using the evidence to create an opinion essay. In the UbD model, we as teachers start doing our lessons backward so we will first show our goal with an opinion piece based on text evidence from a scholarly article. We then ask the students essential questions  about the article they will be placed to read. While building off these questions will have the students start , thinking more in depth in the article they are working with in this case, Should Chocolate Milk Be Banned from Schools?

When teaching children it find text evidence, the best thing to do is choose an article which can acknowledge essential questions in which one will need to look and read the text at a closer level to enhance the students to answer while creating their own essential questions. You can use the UBD planning to help also encourage the students to find evidence to support their idea in their everyday like(The Great Books Foundation,2020).

Would you start with an article basedopion essay, or a free write opion essay?

Part 2:

Some Students will know:

*What supporting evidence is

*difference between facts and creativity in an article

* importance of opinion essays

-Most students will know:

*How to write a thesis statement

*how to use supporting evidence

*how to incorporate  personal opinions with evidence from an article

-All students will know:

*What an opinion is

*how to construct an opinion essay

*difference between types of essays. Ex. Opinion piece, creative

 Blog Three:

Part !: GRASPS(real world scenerios included in unit).

G-

Goal: Students will learn how to pull out supporting textual information

R- Role: Creating an opinion based on a situation and evidence from text

  1. Audience: Other 4th grade classmates

S-Scenario: Can students form their own opinion  with evidence in which is given to them

P-Product: Was a valid opinion essay  created with information on an article

S-Success: The student was able to create a valid opinion essay while incorporating evidence or facts to support their opinion.

This unit can be adjusted to have the students look at the lesson planning through the eyes of someone other than a student For example, when using this article, the students can use their own writing to view the nutritional information as a nutritionist. Another way the occupation could change in this unit would be writing in third person as a class in whole. Or even as a cafeteria working who is trying to explain the need for a balanced lunch to the head manager or principal.

Part 2:

By using an informational article  to form an opinion essay could help Joe and other students excel in the language arts subjects.  Pulling out supporting details or evidence can help one develop reading comprehension, by finding out what shows key importance in the article, and what can be the most useful when stating your opinion. Joe’s writing will improve as he starts to put his words to paper and can use text evidence to help support his thoughts. Using the Authentic assessment tool is a form of assessment in which a learner’s knowledge is based on real world situations in the means of the student to see what they have actually learned from the unit(Post University, N.D.).

How else can we use supporting evidence in our opinion essays?

How are supporting evidence in an opinion writing different than persuasive essays?

Blog 4-Part 1:

When assessing my students, I would follow the WHERETO requirements. The Acronym stands for W: who am I teaching and what do I imagine they will learn. H:hook, or how can I keep their attention. E:the way I will make their experience in my lesson. Next is the R, how will I encourage the students  to review their work or offer others help.  The second E: stands for evaluate and how the students will review their work to get an idea on how they feel they did. The T stands for  Tailor, so how will the students adjust their work and change the things need to before turning it in. Last is the organization piece what I will do to supply the students with the tools to organize their essays(Post University, N.D.).

W. : I expect  the students to be able to review an article and pull out and use key supporting details based on their opinion essay topic.

H: I would provide multiple articles  for the students to choose from that may catch their attention.

E: I would go through the Should Chocolate Milk Be Banned From Schools article as a class by reading, stopping at key supporting facts highlight each side of an opinion in different colors, allow them to take notes. Then go through the steps on forming an opinion with supporting facts. Last, We would write this first essay as an individual.

R:Once essay is completed, I  would pair them with others in their same opinion to look over and review each other’s opinion piece, to be sure there are supporting facts, and how to adjust the essay with key facts

E:  I would offer a checklist rubric to see if they hit all the key points, reread peers’ comments.

T: For Joe I would supply him with voice recognition technology/iPad app, to help him get his words on paper.

O:Supply students with a Venn diagram to help compare and contrast both sides. Also supply a graphic organizer essay planning page with main ideas and bullet points for supporting facts.

Could allowing students to choose their own article cause more confusion?

Part 2

(Amazon systems inc,2020).

This learning plan was put into place to help students find main information in a text to build supporting  opinion essay to help a reader understand why their opinion is important. Using the UBD, helps the student’s find evidence and build an opinion solely off evidence, Where the UDL allows the student to have an opinion in mind from the start and find evidence to support, or back up their opinion. On Joe’s learning plan, reading the article and working with peers to review his work is very beneficial, it will help his main idea be noted  and be able to use the UBD method to fill in the blanks as to why his opinion  makes a valid point.

Reflection:

I found making this class very knowledgeable, as I never thought about starting a lesson plan from the end result and working backward to the beginning of the lesson like the UbD suggested. I always thought a plan had to start off step by step and end with the expected result. Seeing my lesson plan come together was very interesting to me, seeing the different steps i would have to use in order to create a good unit plan. I learned while assessing myself as a teacher there is more to consider than just what students have gotten out of my plesson, such as my time frame and essential questions, something I never really thought about. This class really opened my eyes on what I would need to follow and use in my future. There is much more to implement a lesson than the immediate thought which I once believed.
