Diversity Issues in the 21st Century Education

Reading Lolita In Tehran: I chose to read this story in hopes to learn more about the troubles on schooling for the women in the Islamic culture.

In this story the author starts by giving us an overview on 7 women students by painting a picture in the reader’s mind on what it was like to hide who you were due to the religion you believed in. Iranian women were not allowed to attend school so Azar Nafisi, started to teach these women in secrecy. She taught western literature. The story goes into depth in four parts based on four different pieces of literature in which one can identify and connect their personal experiences to the stories. The women go throughout the story learning who they really are by these connections to the story.

Unit 8:

In the beginning of this module I believed I knew it all about culture such as cultural groups being based off of ethnicity, sexuality, and abled individuals, however my eyes have been opened to a wider variety of cultures, and how a culture can be any group of people who identify themselves with special interests, socioeconomic classes, languages.  This course made my look back at my culture identity of myself and see the change in how I original identified myself and what groups I now am part of. For example, I first believed I was in the disabled/epileptic/ stroke victims single parent groups. I now see I am also part of the working class, football fan, amazon shopping culture as well. It really amazes me how much as changed over these last few weeks. Have you noticed a change in your own culture identity? As a class we also make up the educator and student cultures as we all share a come interest and goal within education.
